Background of the Study
Language revitalization programs play a crucial role in preserving indigenous tongues in the face of globalization and cultural assimilation. In Benue State, Tiv speakers have witnessed several policy-driven initiatives aimed at reviving and sustaining the Tiv language. These programs, often supported by government agencies and community organizations, involve curriculum development, language workshops, media campaigns, and the production of educational materials. Recent reforms have focused on integrating Tiv language instruction in schools and promoting its use in public domains, thereby aiming to strengthen cultural identity and social cohesion among Tiv communities (Agba, 2023). The programs emphasize not only the preservation of traditional vocabulary and grammar but also the modernization of language usage to meet contemporary communication needs. Stakeholders argue that effective language revitalization requires a combination of top-down policy support and bottom-up community engagement. As Tiv speakers increasingly participate in urban migration and digital communication, maintaining linguistic heritage has become a priority. This study appraises these policy-driven revitalization programs by examining their design, implementation, and outcomes. It seeks to identify factors that contribute to success as well as obstacles that impede progress, thereby providing recommendations for more robust language planning in Benue. The investigation also considers how these programs enhance the status of the Tiv language within educational and cultural spheres, ensuring its sustainability for future generations (Okorie, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the launch of numerous language revitalization programs, there remains a gap in empirical understanding of their effectiveness among Tiv speakers in Benue. Many initiatives, although well-intentioned, face challenges such as inadequate funding, insufficient teacher training, and low community participation. These issues hinder the seamless integration of Tiv language in formal education and media. Consequently, the overall impact on language proficiency and cultural continuity is uncertain. This study seeks to address these concerns by critically evaluating how policy-driven programs are implemented and their tangible effects on language use among Tiv speakers, thereby identifying practical measures to enhance program outcomes (Agba, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the design and implementation of Tiv language revitalization programs.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these programs on language usage and cultural preservation.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving policy-driven language revitalization.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key features of current Tiv language revitalization programs?

  2. How effective are these programs in enhancing Tiv language usage?

  3. What improvements can be made to optimize these initiatives?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth evaluation of policy-driven language revitalization among Tiv speakers, offering crucial insights for policymakers, educators, and cultural advocates. By identifying strengths and weaknesses in current programs, the research will inform more effective language planning strategies and resource allocation, thereby contributing to the sustainable preservation of the Tiv language (Agba, 2023; Okorie, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining policy-driven language revitalization programs among Tiv speakers in Benue and does not extend to other regions or languages.
